About Tohoku
One of the remarkable aspects of skiing in Tohoku is the convenience afforded by the exceptional bullet train network. Bid farewell to the need for internal flights from Tokyo as you board a swift train to Korivama station, a mere 1 hour and 20 minutes away. Following this seamless journey, a short private transfer of approximately 1 hour will deliver you to your hotel, ensuring you wake up refreshed and ready to hit the slopes the following day.
Join us on this unforgettable adventure, where you can relish the renowned light powder of Tohoku, accompanied by expert guidance and effortless travel arrangements, all contributing to an exceptional ski experience.
Our Tohoku Ski Safari will run on selected departures from the 11th to the 19th of March 2024.
This ski tour is available for adults only. Ideal for students who have completed the Piste to Profession programme, friends, couples, families with adult children, and solo travellers. You must be a confident black run skier with off-piste experience.
Our Ski Safari package prices are based on 8-night B&B-based accommodation (3 and 4-star) with upgraded accommodation options available on request and subject to additional cost. The package includes all private long-distance group transfers, all in-resort transfers (where required), all ski passes for each region, night skiing options in resorts, a professional Japanese-speaking Powder Byrne Ski Guide throughout the tour, and additional private tour guides.
The Tohoku Ski Safari package does not include flights, any required ski hire, or meals. The tour is subject to a minimum number.
ITINERARY
Our Tohoku Ski Safari is designed to provide expert skiers with the ultimate experience, away from the masses, experiencing authentic ski resorts, enjoying hand-picked Ryokans, and 3 and 4-star hotels.
Arriving in Tohoku
The attraction of skiing in the Tohoku region is that thanks to the exceptional bullet train network, there is no need to take an internal flight from Tokyo. Take a train to Koriyama station (1h 20mins) and a short private transfer (1hr) and you’ll pull into your hotel ready to hit the slopes the next day feeling fresh.

Discover Tohoku
Firstly you’ll discover the largest ski area in Tohoku, spanning the 3 mountains of Mt. Bandai, Mt. Nekomagadate and Mt. Umaya, enjoying 2 full ski days in Alts Bandai with your Powder Byrne ski guide. From there, your private transfer (2h 15mins) will deliver you to Zao Onsen, a legendary ski resort in central Tohoku, your base for the next 3 nights.
Discover Zao Onsen
Zao Onsen is a unique ski resort with a rich history and natural attractions offering 57 slopes served by modern gondolas and lifts. The town has been welcoming visitors since 860, and its steaming sulphur waters have made it a famous onsen spa town. The acidic baths throughout the resort offer rejuvenating effects and are a must-try experience.

Juhyogen Slope
Known for its incredible powder snow, interconnected ski zone and ‘Snow Monsters’ (trees laden with deep snow and frozen into unearthly forms). The Juhyogen slope stands out as the longest intermediate run in the resort, spanning over 10 km from the top to the village centre.
Cultural Heritage
Zao Onsen’s rich cultural heritage sets it apart from other resorts. It offers a more authentic experience compared to internationally-styled resorts like Niseko, attracting skiers seeking a deeper connection to Japan’s history and culture.
