Sustainability Policy

At Powder Byrne we are looking to a more sustainable future and committing to being responsible with our use of the environment and its resources. We endeavour to manage this through considering the impact of our services and operations on nature and the environment in our sustainability policy.

Our Commitments

Carbon offsetting is at the heart of our commitments to mitigate and lower the impact our business has on the environment. We also strive to achieve a more sustainable approach to our operations through our choice of partners, services and destinations and our 3R’s of recycling: reduce, reuse, recycle.

Swisstainable Member

We are part of the sustainability programme Swisstainable and classified at Level I – committed. The sustainability programme Swisstainable unites businesses and organizations along the entire Swiss tourism sector. With our participation, we commit ourselves to continuous sustainable business development, we pursue measures in the field of sustainability and thus make a concrete contribution to sustainable tourism in Switzerland.

Carbon Offsetting

To reduce our impact we endeavour to offset our carbon where possible. We work alongside certified Gold Standard Projects in developing countries and strive to reduce CO2 and advocate sustainable development. We are currently offsetting some of our carbon alongside Baum Invest, who has planted over 655,000 trees in northern Costa Rica, one of the Air & Space destinations. This has reduced emissions of CO2 equivalents by 123,732 tonnes.

Since our project was launched in November 2019, we have offset over 450 tonnes of carbon.

Kenya Treks

Our ski guides are famous on the mountain for their red Powder Byrne ski jackets and smart appearance. We take great pride in looking after our kit and at the end of each season we retire some of older ski jackets and donate them to Kenya Treks, a member of Responsible Travel, which means they support local business and pay their staff fair wages. Kenya Treks recruit their guides and porters from the local community. Their team is registered with the Kenya Wildlife Service and their guides are Wilderness First Aid trained.

Resort Waste

Our resort teams are responsible for managing and recycling the waste that we produce across our resort operations and we work closely with our resort partners to ensure that we reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible.

We have taken a significant step to reduce our use of single use plastic bottles through gifting personalised chilly bottles to our clients for use on their holiday and thereafter.

Green Ski Resorts

The green credentials of our partners is something we seriously consider when selecting which destinations, hotels and service providers we choose to work with.  Our ski resort partners are at the forefront of sustainable skiing and environmental conservation in the mountains:

  • Flims and Laax have introduced their ‘greenstyle’ concept, using 100% renewable energy resources and protecting and replanting flora and fauna across the mountain.
  • In Zermatt, no cars are allowed in the village and the resort is committed to forest and wildlife conservation as well as using ‘eco speed’ snow cannons.
  • Zurs and Lech are powered by a biomass plant with 80% of the necessary energy for the resort generated using renewable biomass resources saving 22,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
