The local village of San Roque, just to the south of Sotogrande, with its tumbling narrow streets of whitewashed houses, has maintained a quintessential Andalucian flavour for centuries. It’s perfect for an evening adventure to explore the local shops, bars and restaurants, but the village has a fascinating history which deserves further exploration if you have the time. The bullring is one of the oldest in Andulucia and the views over to Gibraltar and the African coast are breathtaking.
A mecca for kite surfers, the beaches of the southern tip of Spain are wild and windswept and make for a great day excursion, just a 40 minute drive from Sotogrande. You’ll find a very laid back vibe with beach bars and restaurants offering you great views of all the action on the water and we can book local instructors to give you a taste of this addictive sport.
If you want to escape to the hills and soak up some local culture and see a different side of southern Spain, Ronda is a great destination, just a 1h30min drive and you are in the heart of nature. There are some lovely walks, culture vultures must visit the Casgo Antigo, Ronda’s ancient Moorish city, including the Palacio Mondragon, the mediaeval palace of the Moorish Kings, and the Plaza Toro, widely considered one of the oldest bullrings in the world.
We highly recommend a day excursion to beautiful Jerez, where you can discover the secrets of this ancient city with it’s Moorish roots. More recently synonymous with sherry production, you can tour the bodegas and cellars and enjoy hosted tastings to discover more about a wine that is increasingly back on the modern agenda. The city is also closely linked with the traditional art of Flamenco, and there are opportunities throughout the year to experience this unique national dance. Jerez is just 1h 40mins by car from Sotogrande.
