The Inferno, With Team PB

There are ski races, and then there is the Inferno.

Set in Mürren, high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the Inferno is one of the great amateur downhill ski races. It is fast, historic, demanding and full of atmosphere. For confident adult skiers with good fitness, it offers something wonderfully different from a traditional ski holiday. A challenge to train for, a team to join and a finish line that stays with you long after the skis are put away.

For Powder Byrne, it also has a particular meaning. This part of Switzerland is where our story began, and returning to the Jungfrau Region for race week feels like a natural extension of our heritage. Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and the Schilthorn are woven into our history, and the Inferno brings together everything we love about skiing. Skill, courage, friendship, mountain knowledge and a little healthy competition.

Guests join the Powder Byrne race team, with hosted skiing, race preparation, and support throughout the week. The experience is designed for good skiers who want to take on something memorable, but not for those with a racing background. It is about skiing well, pacing yourself, learning the course and enjoying the satisfaction of taking part in one of the Alps’ most iconic events as an amateur.

The week builds gradually. On arrival, guests settle in, meet the Powder Byrne team and begin to get a feel for the programme ahead. The first ski days are spent exploring the Jungfrau Region with our guides, finding the best routes, getting used to the terrain and enjoying relaxed mountain lunches with the group. As the week progresses, attention turns more towards Mürren, the Schilthorn and the race itself, with course insight, local knowledge and the chance to understand how to approach the run with care and confidence.

There is time to ski, time to prepare and time to enjoy the atmosphere. Race bib collection, race suit fittings, final checks and the growing excitement in the village all become part of the experience. For many guests, this build-up is as memorable as the race itself.

Race day is unlike anything else. Racers start at 12-second intervals, each taking on the course in their own way. There is speed, effort, uphill strategy and the unmistakable energy of being surrounded by fellow amateur skiers from across the world. Crossing the finish line with burning legs and a giant smile is a personal achievement, but it is also a shared moment with Team PB waiting at the end. Then to celebrate…

For those who prefer not to race, the weekend is still a wonderful spectacle. Supporters are very much part of the experience, with scenic walks, hosted lunches, carefully chosen viewing points and the chance to enjoy the atmosphere of Mürren during one of its most exciting weekends of the season.

The Inferno is not only about racing. It is about stepping slightly outside the usual ski week and discovering what the mountain can offer when challenge, camaraderie and Powder Byrne service come together.

For some, once is enough. For others, always a racer.
