Autumn in Japan: A journey through a timeless landscape
Autumn is one of Japan’s most captivating seasons. As maple forests glow in shades of crimson and gold, the country’s landscapes take on an entirely different character. While Kyoto’s famous temples and Tokyo’s vibrant streets are at their finest, it is in the lesser-explored Tohoku region that autumn reveals its quieter, more authentic beauty.
Our new Japan Autumn Tour has been carefully designed to showcase both the celebrated highlights and the hidden corners of Japan. Beginning in Tokyo, you will then journey north aboard the iconic shinkansen, travelling into a region known for its dramatic coastline, centuries-old traditions and breathtaking autumn scenery.

In Miyagi Prefecture, discover Matsushima Bay, regarded as one of Japan’s famous Three Scenic Views. Cruising among more than 200 pine-covered islands offers a peaceful introduction to Tohoku, while visits to historic temples, samurai tea houses and evening illuminations reveal the region’s rich cultural heritage. Staying in a traditional ryokan overlooking the bay allows you to experience the warmth of Japanese hospitality at its finest.
As you continue along the spectacular ria coastline of Kesennuma, you will gain an insight into a way of life shaped by the sea. Visiting oyster and scallop farms, exploring one of Japan’s busiest fishing ports and tasting locally crafted sake provide authentic experiences and a connection to the people and traditions of this remarkable region.

The journey then goes inland to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hiraizumi before enjoying the tranquillity of one of northern Japan’s renowned onsen resorts. From there travel south to Kyoto, where Japan’s cultural treasures await. Golden temples, historic castles, lantern-lined streets and iconic shrines are all enhanced by the spectacular colours of the autumn foliage, beauty is around every corner.

Returning to Tokyo experience the city’s remarkable contrasts, from the historic atmosphere of Asakusa to the contemporary art of teamLab Borderless and the refined elegance of Ginza. Throughout the autumn journey you will stay in a carefully selected collection of luxury hotels and traditional ryokans, combining exceptional comfort with a sense of place.
As with every Powder Byrne journey, every detail has been thoughtfully planned. Private guides, seamless transfers and carefully curated experiences allow you to travel at a relaxed pace, discovering Japan through the people, places and traditions that make it so extraordinary.
