Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America and often referred to as the "Switzerland of Latin America".
With half of the population of 3.5m people living in the capital city Montevideo, the majority of the country is sparsely populated. It is not uncommon for Estancias (Ranches) to have fields of over 100 hectares making it perfect for a riding adventure.
The people of this beautiful country are known for being very environmentally conscious; therefore, the countryside and beaches are very clean and well taken care of, making it a truly spectacular place to visit.

Our horse riding holiday takes you through ranches, wetlands, forests and the wonderful wild Atlantic beaches of Uruguay. On this scenic trek you'll experience countryside like no where else in the world, and see local wildlife from turtles, sea lions and whales to armadillos. The tour is designed for all levels of riders; you do not need to be an expert at horsemanship in order to have a fabulous time and really take something away from this unique experience. The horses we provide are hand-picked by the Gauchos and matched to the ability of the rider. You’ll ride for approximately four hours a day, but don't worry about being saddle sore, because you'll be treated to the special Uruguayan saddle, which is covered in sheepskin!
Arrive into Montevideo
Your guide and driver will meet you at the airport and take you to your first stop over. When you arrive to your first hotel if it's not too late you will have the chance to meet the horses that you will be riding over the coming week.
First morning gives you the perfect opportunity to properly meet and get to know your horse. Start off nice and easy with a trip through the San Miguel Reserve to the fortress that was built back in 1734. After a long lunch make your way through the wetlands to Estancia San Miguel. Then back to the hotel with plenty of time to relax.
Chuy and Palmares de La Coronilla.
After breakast you will be taken to the city Chuy, where if you choose there is a great selection of gaucho wear for your trip. Spend the day riding through the prairies and then along the beach stopping off at lunch for a gourmet picnic. Spend the afternoon riding through the waves and along the beach to Palmares de al Coronillla.
Santa Teresa National Park
An adventurous fourth day will see you being by riding to Cerro Verde. As you are only allowed to travel there by foot or by horse it is a pristine and if you're lucky you may be able to spot whales or marine turtles. After lunch you will be riding along the beach to Santa Teresa Park with its stunning fortress.
Santa Teresa and Laguna Negra
A lesuirely breakfast is followed by a tour of Avenida Horacio Arredondo, which is a botanic garden and dairy. After your walk around its time to remount and head through Recrei del Soldado to the Black Lagoon. In contrast to its name the water here is pure and covers 182km2 while only being at a depth of 5m.
Cabo Polonio and Sand Dunes
The Dunes of Valizas and Cabo Polonio are you starting point to todays ride. Make your way through the National Park to the Village of Cabo Polonio. With only a few machines allowed in the village, its like going back in time. After lunch gallop along the beach to the lighthouse and the sea lion reserve. Make sure you climb the lighthouse for the spectacular panoramic views.
Birds and Cattle
This morning the wetlands and native forest of Estanica La Guardia del Monte. Keep your eyes open as this area has the highest concentration of birds in the country. After a relaxing lunch you will be feeling like a local as you start working with the gauchos to herd and cattle.
Vineyards and Travelling Home
After breakfast make your way to a the vineyard where you host will take you through the different wines that they produce. After a hearty lunch and good wine you will make your way to the airport in time for your flights home.
