Powder Byrne Bryanston Prep School 7s
The Powder Byrne Prep Schools 7s launches at Bryanston School in Dorset in glorious sunshine. Our thanks to Mike Pyrgos and the ever-impressive Bryanston rugby staff, refs and supporters for hosting a superb day of Prep Schools rugby and welcoming all the participating schools so warmly.
Our thanks also to Bath Rugby Academy who supported the event on the day. Academy Director, Danny Grewcock MBE (former Bath, England and British Lion) was in attendance with a selection of current Bath Academy stars, 1 of which was an ex-Bryanston boy himself, confirmation (if one were needed) of the quality the school produces through their programme.
With 44 teams from across 22 schools playing in U11s and U13s categories all heading for the stunning grounds of Bryanston School, Dorset the tournament was always set to be a fantastic event, but with the sun coming out to join us and the great turn out from parents and supporters it really did create an incredible atmosphere. The seamless organisation of the tournament draw from Bryanston School was complimented by the high standard of rugby played by all the boys.
In the U13s tournament the standard of rugby was at an incredible level with some very evenly matched teams, one particular semi final going on for a staggering 18 minutes extra time after a 20 minute match! In the end the final came down to Millfield and St Olaves. Two great trys from the lightening pace of their fly half saw Millfield School lift the cup and Jordan take home Player of the Tournament, selected personally by Danny Grewcock MBE.
The U11s tournament saw Sherborne lift the cup with a closely battled final, the team's hard work throughout the day paid off, only letting three trys past their solid defence in the whole tournament. But it was Jai Thompson of Sherborne who lifted the Player of the Tournament trophy in the U11s category, Jai is just 9 years old and scored the try that sealed Sherborne's victory in the finals.
The event was well supported by parents from all schools, some travelling the length of the country to enjoy a great days rugby and Bryanstons hospitality.
