Powder Byrne Bryanston Prep Schools 7s
The Powder Byrne Bryanston Prep Schools 7s 2013
With the great success of the Wellington College Prep Schools 15s tournament with over 1,000 budding rugby stars and 500 supporters the previous Wednesday, the event at Byranston in early December was the last of Powder Byrne’s sponsored rugby tournaments of 2013.
With an early 5:30am start for the Powder Byrne team we headed down to Bryanston School, Dorset in preparation for the Powder Byrne Bryanston Prep Schools 7s. With over 40 teams across 26 schools in U11s and U13s categories playing across the fantastic grounds with 4 full and several half sized pitches. It was set to be an exciting day!
Although the tournament kicked off to a drizzly start in true British style, this certainly didn’t dampen the teams' spirits nor their determination to come away with some silverware and their heads held high. As soon as the boys were bundled off the many busses in was boiler suits and boots on for their pre-match warm ups. It soon became clear we would be witnessing an exceptionally high standard of rugby from both age groups! Over 300 parents flocked to the sidelines to cheer on their child’s school in true competitive fashion. Some parents and schools traveled the length of the country in order to be at the event and we're very grateful they did!
Adding to the excitement was player appearances from three professional rugby players Ollie Devoto, Charlie Ewels and Will Skuse of Bath Rugby, who also happened to be Bryanston Old Boys, much to the young players' excitement. Autograph signings were done and pictures were taken as the "Bath Boys" (as they were known on the day) made their away around the pitches, giving tips and support to teams and talent spotting before presenting the awards and Powder Byrne champion T-shirts to the winning teams.
In the U11 tournament the Player of the Tournament went to Charlie McKay selected by the Bath players for his impressive, unrelenting performance on the pitch. The U13 Player of the Tournament went to Ali Kareem from Millfield selected by Michael Pyrgos from Bryanston for his determination and unstoppable performance, particularly in the Cup Final where he dominated the pitch putting on a great performance much to the delight of the many impressed supporters.
We'd especially like to extend our many congratulations to the following teams:
U11 Plate Winners: Perrott Hill
U11 Cup Winners: The Downs
U11 Shield Winners: Chafyn Grove
U13 Bowl Winners: Cheltenham
U13 Plate Winners: The Dragon
U13 Cup Winners: Millfield
As the official sponsors of the tournament our two PB photographers took pictures of all the competing teams throughout the day, which we are happy to provide all parents and schools on a complimentary basis. Photos can be accessed by clicking on the following link:
We’d also like to thank Bath Rugby Academy who supported the event on the day and Academy Director, Danny Grewcock (former Bath, England and British Lion). As well as Michael Pyrgos and Andy Marriott (Master i/c of Rugby) at Bryanston for putting on a fantastic event.
The Powder Byrne Bryanston Prep Schools 7s 2012
The Powder Byrne Prep Schools 7s launches at Bryanston School in Dorset in glorious sunshine. Our thanks to Mike Pyrgos and the ever-impressive Bryanston rugby staff, refs and supporters for hosting a superb day of Prep Schools rugby and welcoming all the participating schools so warmly.
Our thanks also to Bath Rugby Academy who supported the event on the day. Academy Director, Danny Grewcock MBE (former Bath, England and British Lion) was in attendance with a selection of current Bath Academy stars, 1 of which was an ex-Bryanston boy himself, confirmation (if one were needed) of the quality the school produces through their programme.
With 44 teams from across 22 schools playing in U11s and U13s categories all heading for the stunning grounds of Bryanston School, Dorset the tournament was always set to be a fantastic event, but with the sun coming out to join us and the great turn out from parents and supporters it really did create an incredible atmosphere. The seamless organisation of the tournament draw from Bryanston School was complimented by the high standard of rugby played by all the boys.
In the U13s tournament the standard of rugby was at an incredible level with some very evenly matched teams, one particular semi final going on for a staggering 18 minutes extra time after a 20 minute match! In the end the final came down to Millfield and St Olaves. Two great trys from the lightening pace of their fly half saw Millfield School lift the cup and Jordan take home Player of the Tournament, selected personally by Danny Grewcock MBE.
The U11s tournament saw Sherborne lift the cup with a closely battled final, the team's hard work throughout the day paid off, only letting three trys past their solid defence in the whole tournament. But it was Jai Thompson of Sherborne who lifted the Player of the Tournament trophy in the U11s category, Jai is just 9 years old and scored the try that sealed Sherborne's victory in the finals.
The event was well supported by parents from all schools, some travelling the length of the country to enjoy a great days rugby and Bryanston's hospitality.
"A great sporting day, extremely well organised and looking forward to being more involved next year." Danny Grewcock, MBE, Bath Academy Director, Former Bath Rugby Lock, England World Cup Squad and British Lion
